Farmers in Tra Vinh province’s coastal areas expanded the breeding of shrimp and other aquatic species to an additional 1,700ha of mangrove forests this year, according to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The EU is the largest export market of Vietnamese shrimp, accounting for 24.7 percent of Vietnam’s total shrimp exports. Vietnam’s shrimp exports to this market as of September this year reached 648.4 million USD, up 11 percent over the same period in 2017.
Intensive processing has served as an effective tool for Vietnamese shrimp exporters to improve their competitive capacity in the context of a steep increase in the global supply which brought down the price and demand for shrimp in major markets.
After a slight decrease of 5% in QII/2018, Vietnam’s shrimp exports in the first month of QIII decreased by 20.3% to see US$294.5 million. The figure in the first 7 months of this year estimated at US$1.9 billion, a slight rise of 0.2% over the same period last year.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong has called for more efforts to push aquatic product export turnover to 10 billion USD in 2019.
